Review

It was a night of grandeur and romance, of power plays and life-changing decisions. The story of Esther, the young Jewish girl who became queen of Persia in the 5th century BC, has fascinated people for centuries. But it wasn’t until the release of “One Night with the King,” a film adaptation of her story, that audiences were truly able to immerse themselves in all the drama and intrigue.

The movie, which was released in 2006 and directed by Michael O. Sajbel, stars Tiffany Dupont as Esther, Luke Goss as King Xerxes, and John Rhys-Davies as Prince Admantha. It tells the story of how Esther, who was originally named Hadassah, went from an orphaned slave girl to one of the most powerful women in ancient Persia.

The film is based on the biblical book of Esther but takes some creative liberties with its storyline to make it more engaging for modern audiences. The plot follows Hadassah’s journey from her home in Judea to the court of King Xerxes in Susa. There she is chosen to be part of his harem and eventually becomes queen after winning his heart.

But becoming queen isn’t just a matter of finding favor with the king. There are political machinations at play as well. The king’s trusted advisor Haman (played by James Callis) is plotting against the Jews, including Esther’s own cousin Mordecai (played by Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister). With her newfound power and position, Esther must find a way to save her people from destruction.

The film does an excellent job of bringing this story to life. The costumes are sumptuous and detailed, transporting viewers back to ancient Persia with all its pomp and circumstance. The sets are grandiose yet intimate when needed, such as when we see Xerxes alone in his private chambers. And the score by J.A.C. Redford provides a sweeping, emotional backdrop to the action.

But it’s the performances that truly make “One Night with the King” a standout film. Dupont is luminous as Esther, able to convey both her vulnerability and her strength with ease. She plays off of Goss’s Xerxes well, portraying their growing love story in a way that feels genuine and earned. Rhys-Davies is his usual charismatic self as Admantha, bringing some much-needed levity to the story.

The supporting cast is also excellent. Callis is delightfully sinister as Haman, while Lister brings a quiet dignity to Mordecai. Peter O’Toole even makes an appearance as Samuel, a prophet who delivers some of the film’s most memorable lines.

Of course, not everyone was a fan of “One Night with the King.” Some criticized it for being too melodramatic or for straying too far from the biblical text. But others praised its efforts to bring Esther’s story to life in a more accessible way.

In terms of box office success, “One Night with the King” wasn’t exactly a blockbuster hit. It grossed just over $13 million worldwide against a budget of $20 million. But it did find an audience among Christian moviegoers and has since become something of a cult classic.

Despite its flaws, “One Night with the King” remains an engaging and heartfelt retelling of one of history’s most fascinating stories. Whether you’re interested in ancient Persia or simply looking for an epic love story, this film has something for everyone. So sit back, grab some popcorn (or maybe some wine and cheese if you’re feeling fancy), and get ready for one unforgettable night at court.
