Review

As a devoted horror fan and behavioral economist, I cannot pass up the chance to discuss the infamous “Paranormal Activity 4” in all its spooky glory. It’s been nine years since the release of the first Paranormal Activity movie, and this fourth installment promises to be just as bone-chilling as its predecessors. Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, this movie returns us to the familiar territory of a family being tormented by supernatural forces. Let’s dig into what makes this horror franchise so exciting.

First things first, what’s the storyline? The movie starts with a new family (the Nelsons) moving into a quiet suburban neighborhood in Nevada. The family consists of Alex (Kathryn Newton), her little brother Wyatt (Aiden Lovekamp), their parents Doug (Stephen Dunham) and Holly (Alexondra Lee), and their German Shepherd Hunter. Shortly after they move in, strange things begin to happen around their house and neighborhood. A mysterious woman named Katie (Katie Featherston) moves in across the street with her young son Robbie (Brady Allen), who becomes friends with Wyatt. As expected, things start to get eerie when Wyatt begins to act strangely after being left alone with Robbie.

The plot thickens when Alex installs a computer system linked to cameras positioned throughout the house. The cameras capture some inexplicable footage as strange occurrences become more frequent. Alex enlists her boyfriend Ben (Matt Shively) to help investigate these happenings, leading them down an increasingly terrifying path.

One fact about this film that may surprise you is that much of it was filmed without a complete script! Instead, most of it was improvised by actors on set based on an outline provided by directors Joost and Schulman. This tactic worked well for them in previous installments of the franchise where nearly all dialogue was improvised.

The cast is compelling too! With Kathryn Newton in the lead role, she takes on the responsibility of a character that drives the plot forward. Her portrayal of Alex is convincing and relatable. Shively does an excellent job with his performance as Ben, bringing humor and levity to the tense scenes. Together they form a dynamic duo that leads the audience through this horror tale.

Fun fact alert! Did you know that this movie was originally titled “The Oxnard Tapes”? It got changed to “Paranormal Activity 4” much later in production. The franchise has been criticized for being too formulaic, but it’s hard to deny its popularity. Audiences keep coming back for more scares, evidence of the movie’s huge box office success.

The film’s cinematography is also worth mentioning here. Most of the movie was shot using handheld cameras that give it a found-footage feel, which adds to its realism. There are plenty of jump scares and creepy surprises throughout, particularly towards the end when all hell breaks loose.

Not everyone loves this kind of horror though; some critics have pointed out that it relies heavily on cheap tactics like jump scares rather than building genuine tension. However, I would argue that experiencing these visceral reactions can be therapeutic and beneficial in facing our fears in a safe environment.

One particularly chilling scene involves Robbie interacting with an invisible entity in his bedroom while Katie sleeps soundly beside him. This sequence expertly builds tension without over-relying on music or jump scares – it’s uncomfortable yet mesmerizing at the same time.

We should also not forget about soundtracks! The music throughout is haunting and atmospheric, setting the mood perfectly for each scene. Composer Mark Borden’s score deserves high praise for adding layers of unease to already tense moments.

Of course, special effects played a significant role too – especially when depicting hauntings taking place within a computer system! It’s visually stunning and terrifying when Alex interacts with unseen forces via her laptop or phone.

And let’s not forget what goes on behind the scenes! The production crew did an excellent job of creating a genuinely eerie atmosphere throughout the shoot. The entire house set was built indoors, allowing for more control over the lighting and sound design. The teamwork between cast and crew brings out the best in both and it shows on screen.

Critics may have their gripes with this franchise, but it’s undeniable that “Paranormal Activity 4” delivers on scares, tension, and genuine horror. So go ahead, turn off the lights, and prepare to be spooked – just don’t blame us if you can’t sleep at night after watching this bone-chilling masterpiece!
