Are you tired of the same old cliché romantic movies? It’s time to switch it up and watch “Sunflower,” a movie that will leave you in awe. This dramatic, emotionally charged film is directed by Kang-Hyun Chae and stars the talented and handsome actor, Rain (Jung Ji-Hoon), and actress Kim Hwa-ryeong.
The storyline begins with a young couple, Sun-hwa (played by Kim) and Min-woo (played by Rain). They are deeply in love but are forced apart when Min-woo joins the army to fight in the Vietnam War. Sun-hwa follows her heart and decides to wait for Min-woo to return home. However, when she hears news of his death, she is left devastated.
Years pass, and Sun-hwa moves on with her life while raising Min-woo’s son alone. However, her world turns upside down when Min-woo suddenly returns alive from Vietnam. The movie blends past and present as we see how devastating war can be on individuals who sacrifice their lives for their country.
The cinematography of “Sunflower” is simply breathtaking. The directors’ use of light is extremely effective in creating contrasting moods throughout the movie. The bright yellow sunflowers create a sense of warmth as they symbolize hope amidst tragedy.
Rain gives an outstanding performance as he portrays two different characters; Min-woo before going off to war and his post-traumatic self after returning from Vietnam. He brings both characters to life with his acting skills that show an incredible range of emotions which will keep you hooked until the end.
Kim Hwa-ryeong plays Sun-hwa beautifully; her portrayal of a strong-willed woman who has endured unimaginable pain is impressive. Her character shows independence despite being constantly judged for having a son born out of wedlock during the 1970s.
Now let’s move onto one of my favorite parts of the movie: the soundtrack. The music in “Sunflower” is simply stunning, with songs that will make your heartstrings tug. One particular song that stands out is “Because You’re My Everything” by Gummy. The lyrics are heartfelt as they speak of a love that never fades and will always remain strong despite any challenges faced.
The movie also touches on some dark themes such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is still taboo in some cultures. Min-woo’s character struggles with PTSD after being exposed to traumatic events during the Vietnam War. We see his internal battles, which are difficult to express because of societal pressures and expectations.
“Sunflower” has won many awards, including Best Director at the 27th Blue Dragon Film Awards and Best Actor at the KBS Drama Awards for Rain’s outstanding performance.
The production team did an excellent job recreating vintage Vietnam War-era scenes, which make it seem as though you are watching a real documentary about the war.
The dialogue was well crafted and helped explain some of the deeper thematic elements explored in “Sunflower.” It’s an emotional roller coaster filled with love, heartache, pain, and hope.
