“The Long Night” – An Austen Style Review
In the world of film and literature there are few names more respected than Jane Austen. Her works have been adapted into countless films, each one hoping to capture the magic of her words. This year’s “The Long Night” is no different.
Starring the inimitable Saoirse Ronan and directed by the equally talented Greta Gerwig, “The Long Night” tells a tale of love, loss, and redemption set against the backdrop of rural England in the early 1800s.
The story follows Elizabeth (Ronan), a young woman with a sharp wit and strong spirit who finds herself navigating the ups and downs of life while surrounded by a cast of characters both endearing and infuriating.
From her wry father, Mr. Bennet (Bill Murray), to her equally headstrong sister Jane (Emma Watson), Elizabeth must navigate the treacherous waters of early 19th century society while also coming to terms with her own desires.
Of course, no Austen adaptation would be complete without a dashing suitor or two, and “The Long Night” does not disappoint in this regard. Enter Mr. Darcy (Timothée Chalamet), a wealthy landowner with a sharp tongue and even sharper gaze who immediately catches Elizabeth’s eye.
From here on out, we are treated to a delightful romp through English high society as Elizabeth attempts to juggle her own feelings for Mr. Darcy with his perceived arrogance and societal expectations around marriage.
But this is not just some fluffy romance novel brought to life on screen – “The Long Night” offers up much more than that. The film delves deep into themes of class, gender roles, and societal expectations that are still relevant today.
As director Greta Gerwig said in a recent interview with Variety: “I think what makes Jane Austen so timeless is that she was writing about universal human nature. We still feel these things today – wanting love, wanting acceptance, wanting to be heard.”
And indeed, the film succeeds in making these struggles feel completely relatable despite being set in a time so far removed from our own.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible cast that Gerwig has assembled. Saoirse Ronan is an absolute delight as Elizabeth, bringing just the right amount of humor and pathos to the role. Timothée Chalamet also shines as Mr. Darcy, managing to make what could have been a one-note character into something much more complex.
But it’s not just the leads who steal the show here – everyone from Emma Watson to Laura Dern to Meryl Streep turn in fantastic performances that elevate the film even further. And let’s not forget Bill Murray, who manages to bring a delightful levity to the proceedings as Mr. Bennet.
The production values on display are equally impressive – from the stunning cinematography that perfectly captures both the sweeping English countryside and cramped village life, to the score by composer Alexandre Desplat that somehow feels both classic and modern all at once.
In short, “The Long Night” is a triumph on all fronts. It manages to stay true to its source material while also offering up something fresh and new for modern audiences. It’s no wonder that it’s already garnering buzz for awards season – this is one film you won’t want to miss.
As Elizabeth herself says in one of her most famous quotes: “I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look or the words which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.”
Perhaps we were all in “the middle” before we knew we had begun watching “The Long Night.” But one thing is for sure – we’ll be thinking about it long after the credits have rolled.
