In the dystopian world of “Scanners”, the government has created a team of psychics, known as Scanners, who can read others’ thoughts and manipulate them to their will. The film follows one Scanner, Cameron Vale, as he discovers his powers and becomes embroiled in a battle with the government and other Scanners.
Set in a gritty, urban landscape reminiscent of George Orwell’s “1984”, “Scanners” presents a chilling view of a society controlled by those with extraordinary abilities. The opening scene sets the tone for this dark world as a Scanner’s head explodes during a demonstration, shocking both the characters on screen and the audience.
From there, we are introduced to our protagonist Cameron Vale, played by Stephen Lack. Lack’s understated performance perfectly captures the confusion and terror that comes with discovering these psychic powers. Vale is soon recruited by Dr. Paul Ruth (Patrick McGoohan), who hopes to use him to take down Darryl Revok (Michael Ironside), a powerful Scanner who seeks to overthrow the government.
The plot thickens as we learn more about Revok’s motives and encounter other Scanners along the way. Director David Cronenberg does an excellent job keeping the tension high and the action thrilling throughout.
One key aspect of “Scanners” is its use of practical effects. The famous scene where two Scanners battle each other using their powers is particularly impressive, as it was accomplished entirely through prosthetics and puppetry. This attention to detail adds to the film’s overall sense of realism.
While Lack’s performance may be subtle, Ironside delivers an unforgettable turn as Revok. His intensity brings an intimidating edge to his character that makes him truly terrifying.
