Review

In the small town of Ebbing, Missouri, where everything seems to be stagnant, the only thing that is moving forward is the pain and struggle of Mildred Hayes. Mildred, played by Frances McDormand in Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” is a grieving mother who is desperate for justice for her murdered daughter. Not getting any results from the local police force, she takes it upon herself to fight back with an unconventional approach.

The movie opens with Mildred renting three billboards on a deserted road near her home. These bright-red boards are blank canvases waiting for her message that will provoke anyone who reads them. The message she chooses to display on these billboards call out the local police chief William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) for not putting enough effort in solving her daughter’s case. This move triggers an all-out war between Mildred and the entire police department as well as the community at large.

The film presents a beautiful balance between humor and tragedy. McDonagh has written a script that not only entertains but also causes you to feel deeply for each character in their respective situations of pain and remorse. But while every actor shines in their roles – it’s McDormand who steals the show with her raw performance.

Mildred’s pain and frustration are palpable as she delivers cutting one liners such as “You know what I was thinking about today? I was thinking about those street gangs they have down in Los Angeles, those Crips and those Bloods? I was thinking about that bunch of new laws they came up with in order to battle those street gangs, and how they made it all ten times worse? You know what I’m talking about, right?” McDormand delivers each line with perfect timing and delivery but also manages to bring an underlying vulnerability to the character.

But while most of the attention goes towards McDormand’s acting, Harrelson and Sam Rockwell also bring their A-game to their respective roles. Willoughby is a character with layers upon layers of complexity – his portrayal of a police chief who is struggling with cancer while trying to keep the peace in the town is both moving and profound. Rockwell as Dixon, a reckless and violent officer, gives us a character that we can’t help but hate at the beginning but also root for as the story unfolds.

The production team has done a fantastic job in creating the small-town feel for Ebbing, Missouri. The cinematography by Ben Davis presents wide shots of endless highways and picturesque fields that allow us to take in the beauty and serenity of the surroundings. The score by Carter Burwell elevates each scene adding an eerie quality that helps in building tension throughout.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was released amidst controversy about its handling of race issues – some argue that McDonagh didn’t explore such issues enough. However, it’s important to note that this movie isn’t intended to be an exploration into morality but rather an emotional one. It’s not so much about what you think happened or what you want to happen as it is about how you feel during it all.

Overall, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” is a remarkable film that deserves all the praise it has received since its release. McDonagh’s ability to balance humor and tragedy with impeccable acting from the cast brings us a story that resonates deeply within us long after we leave the theater. And while some may have criticisms regarding its lack of exploration on certain topics, there’s no denying how unforgettable this movie truly is.
